How to Repair Your Own Computer

For some people, repairing their own computer may be quite challenging. This is attributed to the fact that they may not have any knowledge when it comes to computer repair or handling technical devices. If you are such a person, you can know how to repair your computer by using a few tips that work with basic problems.

Various tips

At some point, your computer may tend to stop responding or ‘hang’ as most users would say. If this is the case, you should press the ‘caps lock’ or ‘num lock’ button on your keyboard and check to see if the ‘caps lock’ or ‘num lock’ light is going on or off. If it is not responding, give it several seconds before you try again. Take note that D-I-Y computer repair should never be done in a hurry. If the light does not come on, you can unplug the power cable from the CPU, wait a few seconds, re-plug the cable and switch on the computer.

Apart from handling, you may find that your keyboard or mouse is not responding. This may be after extended use or when you have plugged in an additional USB drive. If this is the case, you should unplug the mouse / keyboard and re-plug. Once you do this, you should try and find out if they are working by trying to use them. If they are still not responding, try using each of the devices on a separate computer. Chances are that the keyboard / mouse has failed and needs replacement.

In some cases, you may find that your computer stops responding immediately or after you start running a particular software that you recently installed. This is common when you are using software that has not been verified by your operating system vendor. If this is the case, you will need to access your control panel. If you are using Windows 7, you will click on the start button, move to all programs. Look for control panel and click it. Once you are there, you will look for add / remove programs and uninstall the program that does not respond.

The same scenario may arise after you have installed some new hardware device. In fact, for new hardware, the computer behaves erratically when you start using any application that uses the device. You are likely to experience non-responsiveness from the computer, funny display and / or sound and in some cases, a blue screen that either restarts the computer or freezes the same. If this is the case, you will need to shut down the computer and remove the hardware you have juts installed. If you really need to use it, you will be required to look for the additional software required for it to work on your machine. In some cases, you may need to get a different version that is compatible with your CPU.

For some people, going through this whole process may be a daunting task. If you are such a person, you will need to look for the services of a qualified technician. This can be done by doing some research on the technicians in your area or contacting your family, work colleagues or friends for referrals. Either way, you will need to make sure you repair your computer as soon as a problem presents itself. Take note that you should not try any D-I-Y methods if you are not sure of the same.

Best Software Options to Back-up Your Computer

Backing up your computer is advisable if you want to make sure you keep your data safe. As much as there are a plethora of software options to choose from, you will need to know the best in the market. Basically, there are two main ways you can go about this; by using the backup software that comes with your operating system or by using third party software from a trusted developer.

Using your operating system

Most, if not all, operating systems have a method you can use to back up your software. If you are using windows 8/8.1, there is a simple process you can use to go about the procedure. Start by double clicking your computer icon on the desktop. If it is not present, you should opt to use any folder and navigating to my computer (normally referred to as ‘This PC’). Once you get there, you should look for the My Control Panel option that is on the ribbon just below the Menu Bar.

Double click on the control panel option. There are two options you will use to view the control panel items. One of them is the view in large category icons and the other is the view in list or small icons. When the large category icons are present, it may take you some time to navigate to the recovery / backup option. If this is the case, you will need to navigate to the left side of the window, just below the ribbon, and you will see a view by option.

From this option, you will see a drop down arrow that will offer options when you click it. Clicking the same will provide two other options namely large or small icons. Select the option you prefer depending on your vision. Some people will see the large icons better while others will see the smaller icons better. The options that appear are many and you will need to look for the recovery option. Clicking on it will offer you several more options.

The first option you will see is the ‘create a recovery drive’ option. This is the option you should click as it will assist you create a backup of your hard drive. In most cases, you will need to use an external USB drive or pen drive. Make sure the device you plug in for the option has more than 256 MB of free data space. If the USB drive has been plugged in, you will just follow the prompts that follow and you will successfully back up your drive in a few minutes. Take note the speed and duration will vary with the amount of data you have in your computer.

Third party software

If you prefer to use third party software, you will need to have an additional drive that has the minimum space requirements of the software. To start with, you will need to look at the software and the requirements it has for running on a computer. Requirements will include the minimum hard disk spaces as well as the memory and processor speed. After installation, you will follow the prompts you see to the letter.
